1. Touch it by hand

When we choose the chinese herb dang shen, we can touch it with our hands to feel how it feels. Generally speaking, the quality of Dang Shen is better when the branches are thicker, the cortex is delicate, the flesh is firm and also with the "lion pan head" at the head of the root.

2. Select the color

Then we can look at the color of Dang Shen, because the color is the most intuitive way to select the herbal materials. Dang Shen of good quality is generally yellowish-white, light brown or tan, with cracks on the surface, yellowish-white cross-section and chrysanthemum heart.

3. Check the Cross-Section

When broken, good Dang Shen usually shows a yellowish-white cross-section with a pale yellow center and a lighter outer ring. The radial lines are often visible, forming what is commonly called a "chrysanthemum heart." The fracture surface may also show small cracks and a powdery texture, which generally indicates better quality.

In some roots, a dark brown gelatinous substance may appear where side roots have broken off. This is sometimes called an "oil head" and is caused by oxidized nutrients seeping out naturally. It is considered normal and does not mean the Dang Shen is poor in quality.

4. Smell the Aroma

Aroma is a simple but very effective way to judge Dang Shen.

Good-quality Dang Shen usually has a mild, sweet herbal fragrance, sometimes with a slight bean-like note. The aroma should be natural and pleasant. If the smell is very weak, completely absent, sour, or sharp and irritating, the product may be old, poorly stored, or sulfur-fumigated. A sulfur-like or acidic smell is a common warning sign of low-quality material and should be avoided.

5. Taste the Root

Taste is another useful method for identifying high-quality Chinese herb dang shen.

A good Dang Shen tastes slightly sweet and leaves a mild herbal sweetness after chewing. The texture should break down relatively easily in the mouth, with little or no fibrous residue. If the root tastes bland, bitter, sour, or has a harsh or unpleasant aftertaste, the quality is usually poor. If it is very fibrous, difficult to chew, or leaves a lot of residue, it is generally considered inferior.

6. Beware of Inferior or Counterfeit Products

In addition to checking the root itself, it is important to recognize common poor-quality or fake products.

Sulfur-fumigated Dang Shen often looks unnaturally white or overly bright. It may have a pungent acidic odor, a sour taste, and may produce cloudy decoction water. This type of product should be avoided.

There are also some counterfeit roots sold in the market. These substitutes may look similar at first glance, but they usually lack the typical "lion pan head," "chrysanthemum heart," or the sweet herbal taste of genuine Dang Shen. For this reason, it is best to compare appearance, aroma, taste, and texture together rather than relying on only one feature.

Conclusion

To select good Chinese herb dang shen, buyers should not judge it by color alone. A reliable evaluation should include the shape of the root, the cross-section, the smell, the taste, and the hand feel. In general, Dang Shen with a thick body, natural wrinkles, a clear "lion pan head," a visible "chrysanthemum heart," a mild sweet aroma, and a slightly sweet taste is usually the better choice.
