Evening primrose, also called oenothera biennis L., is a plant species of the genus oenothera in the onagraceae family. It is mainly distributed in Jilin, Heilongjiang and Liaoning Provinces in China. Most of them are wild and are the emerging medicinal plants and oil plants in recent years. It has become an important raw material for medicine, daily necessities, chemical industry, food and other industries, and has attracted more and more people's attention.
Evening primrose is a herb that integrates medicinal, oil, feeding, ornamental and ecological functions. Its whole herb is a treasure whose roots, leaves, flowers, and seed oils can be used as medicine. The oil content of evening primrose seeds is as high as 18% to 30%. The main components of the oil are linoleic acid （73.5% to 83.9%）, oleic acid above 7.7%, r-linolenic acid（6.9% to 9.4%）, palmitic acid about 6.1%, hard Fatty acid 1.62% to 1.8%, etc., especially r-linolenic acid has a special physiological activity, and has the pharmacological effects such as preventing arteriosclerosis and treating hypertension, coronary heart disease and diabetes. Moreover, evening primrose seed oil is edible, which has the effects of anti-aging, lowering cholesterol and preventing arteriosclerosis.
